Request for help

by Candace Hackett Shively on May 9th, 2008

I am sharing this email sent to me at TeachersFirst from a new project member, so others can learn from both the question and the answer:

HELP!!! I am trying to set up groups for my class.I got the group labeled and then went in to see if a student could apply and keep getting the message that the site ID is invalid. I am putting in 155 (and have tried #155) that was assigned to that group. I went to the blog to report the problem and can’t respond because Word Press keeps giving me a message - incorrect password. I am using the one that was emailed to me when I applied for this project. What do I need to do?

So far, I have responded:You did all the right things, including sending [an email]. Here’s what I know, and I am sending this response to the project coordinator at TRintuition, as well:1. The same password should work for ALL your account log-ins (the BLP blog, TeachersFirst membership, and the workBench):  xxxx2. I assume that you watched the tutorial about making groups (from the links on the blog):http://www.trintuition.com/tutorial/groups (see How-to links at the right on the blog)Note that students who apply to join need both the site ID and the group ID.3. TRintuition has set up a separate area within the workBench strictly for this pilot project. The address for that area ishttp://tf.trintuition.com/tr/I am wondering if perhaps you are allowing students to apply in a different area of the workBench….but we will need Ron G to clarify this. I am posting this message on the blog AND emailing him directly to get you some help as quickly as possible. - CHS, TeachersFirst ED: Ron responded and solved the problem. See the comments on this post!  We hope to maintain this kind of “sharing” for all project participants so we can build learners — including ourselves–together.

Ron G from TRintuition spotted the problem right away! As I suspected, the special area within the workBench carries its own address for students to “apply” to join your groups. We added that link at the right of this blog so you can always start from here to access anything you need for te Building Learner Project. Ron’s full rsponse is here:

It sounds as if you are doing everything right. I just tried to apply to your group with the ID 155, succeeded as a test, and deleted my membership. Try these steps and see if you still have a problem:

    1) Go to http://tf.trintuition.com/apply. (TeachersFirst has its own special address. Don’t go to http://www.trintuition.com/apply. I’ll bet this is the confusion, since the tutorials all refer to http://www.trintuition.com.)

Fill in all the basic information, including the 155 site ID. ( No # or any other character, just the 155.). (Remember, you can put in any email address for student accounts. The email address is only to send you a confirmation and a remind of the username and password that were selected for the application.)

When you’re give the option to select a group, put in the appropriate group ID number (309 for your 5th period class.)

Then reopen the group management window. You have to activate the students by clicking in that box in the permissions before they can log-in. Then hit submit at the bottom of the group management window. You can also set other permissions. These permissions cover the students in this group.

You can also set permissions for each student that covers himnor her no matter what group he or she is in. Click on the “User List” button that is to the right of the “+ New Group” button. Then at the top of that window, click on “Show Me,” then “Web Builders.” You can set permissions for each student and allocate them more or less storage space.

If this doesn’t solve the problem, please get right back to me directly at [his email], and we’ll work it out. I’m suspecting that the tutorials led you to the wrong apply page. We’ll have to fix that quickly!
