Instructions

by khrabik on September 16th, 2008

I am new to this project and need to get started.  I would really like to print out the step by step instructions in your tutorial.  Is there a way to do this?

Thank you

KH

    Hi KH,

What a good question. Sometime it is really good to hold something printed in your hand. I can think of a couple of options but would like to test them out on both a Mac and PC. I’ll get more detailed information to you tomorrow.

You’ve probably already encountered them, but if not, you might take a look at the new videos we’re creating. If you go to the menus to the right on this screen, #3 Workshop Docs, and then under that menu to 2-Building Screens & Projects, it will take you to the videos.

More on printing after my research!

    Hi KH,

    Suggestions on the printing issue:

    1) ON A MAC
Open the tutorial screen you want to print. All together, press the “shift,” “command,” and “4″ keys. The cursor changes into a cross (+) that lets you select and copy any section of the screen.

Position the cursor in the top left corner of the tutorial screen. Holding down the mouse button, drag the cursor diagonally across the screen to the bottom right corner, selecting in the box you’ve created everything that you want to print in the tutorial window. Release the drag, and a picture is taken of that section of the screen.

The picture that you’ve created will appear on the desktop, either as a PDF or a PNG file, with the name “Picture 1,” or whatever number it is. Double-click on it to open it in Preview. Then click on the print button for Preview. When the Print window opens, click on the triangle to the right of the printer name to expand the window for more options. Change the orientation to “landscape,” and click on “Scale to fit.” Hit print. Should print fine.

It’s easier and faster than it sounds. You can take the partial screen shots of a bunch of tutorial pages, and then move on to printing them.

    2) ON A PC
Browser code changes with every update, so this first suggestion for PCs may not work in a different browser version than I have. However, I found that if I opened a tutorial screen in Internet Explorer, I could just print it straight from the browser. Here’s how:

With the tutorial screen open in IE, together hit the “control” and “p” keys to open the print window. When it opens, click on “Preferences” to open the “Printing Shortcuts” options. In the bottom of that window, change the orientation to “landscape.” Click on ok to close the window and print in the print window.

    3) On A PC, OPTION 2
If you don’t have IE on your PC, open a tutorial page in any browser and make as big as you can. Click on the “Print Screen” button on your keyboard. That copies the screen to your clipboard. Open a new Office Word document, change the orientation to landscape, and paste in the screen. Then print.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you for your help. I use PC at home and Mac in my classroom. Option 2 on the PC works really well. I really like having an instruction manual in front of me when I am leaning a new program.

I know how you feel. Sometimes the printed page is much better than toggling between screens.

Let me know if any other questions come up, or if you’re curious about best ways to do a particular type of project.
